This may be possible in a future version of the plugin, but there are no plans to add that functionality as of yet.

FYI - just pushed an update that adds categories to the new posts if images are uploaded through an 'edit post' or new post screen. Will only work if the original post already has categories assigned. Working on a way to handle category assignment for image adds through the media tab as well.

We'll figure it out. :)

I just installed a fresh copy of WordPress 3.3, with only the Twenty Eleven 1.3 theme and my Automatic Featured Image Posts plugin installed.

Any post created by the plugin does have a featured image assigned to it correctly. Here is a screenshot showing how I am able to tell when editing the post - http://ymfti.com/uploads/12292011121635.png

The one catch is that Twenty Eleven's support for featured images is size limited. I uploaded an image that was 1024x768 and it worked properly - the header at the top of the page changed to that image. I uploaded a much smaller image, and it appears nowhere in the theme - only in the edit posts screen under the 'Featured Image' section.

If this matches the behavior of your site, then everything is working properly. If you'd like smaller featured images to play a better role in the site, you may need to look for a different theme.

If it seems like something else is the issue, please let me know what other plugins are installed and provide a sample image so that I can try to duplicate your setup even more.

Hope that helps!

JS - on the surface, it sounds like your theme doesn't support featured images. What theme are you using? Also, if you go into edit the new post that is created, do you see the featured image assigned? Note that it will not appear as part of the content - only has the featured image, so it is up to the theme as to how the image is ultimately displayed. Cheers!
